Polaris is designed and outfitted for living aboard and offshore cruising. The effort has gone into making her a functional and comfortable sturdy passage maker. The Slocum was designed by Stan Huntingford of Vancouver, BC and is a double ender design evolved from his Passport design. The Slocum was built at the Hai-O Yacht Building Yards in Taiwan by Cruising Yachts International under the supervision of Jan Stadman who designed most of the interior. The boat is built with enormous attention to detail. It has many thoughtful and carefully designed features.

Propulsion  is a new 88hp Yanmar 4JH- DTE s/n 36971 turbo diesel with KBW 2 parallel drive transmission (2.17 gear reduction) s/n 5526. 1 1/2" Aquamet 22  shaft tapered to ABYC standards with 18" diameter 3 blade folding Max Prop, PSS packless seal and R&D flexible coupling. Cutlass rubber shaft bearing in bronze "P" bracket. Wet exhaust system with 3" diameter neoprene hose and Vernalift muffler. Morse cable controls to a Yacht Specialties' pedestal and Morse controls at lower steering station. Dual instrument panels in cockpit coaming and lower steering station.

Construction Hull hand laid-up fiberglass with 20mm R62-80 Airex sandwich core. Full length box section stringers along hull. Marine ply bulkheads with Airex shock absorbing edge (rudder rebuilt 1/1/03). Lead keel- 9000lbs flooded with resin and 100% glassed over. Deck hand laid-up fiberglass with 3/4" Baltek balsa wood sandwich core. Teak decks seasoned lumber, quarter sawn with black bedding compound below and in seams, secured to deck by 1" sheet metal screws, countersunk and plugged. Inlaid teak cabin top. Contoured cockpit seats with teak. Five cockpit seat hatches. Two cockpit coaming latches. LPG double bottle storage locker and ice box in aft cockpit seats. Lazarette partitioned for sail storage. Teak rub rail with stainless chafe strip. Teak cap rail. 1" stainless pulpit and pushpit rails. Double stainless lifelines with two gates, white vinyl coated. Six 8" mooring cleats thru bolted with backing plates and chocks. Double stainless pivoting bow anchor chain roller. Six Bomar 3/8" Lexan  with removable screens.

Three stainless cowls and dorade vents with guards and cover plates forward. Two aft stainless cowl vents aft for engine compartment. Stainless mushroom vent over forward stateroom. Five opening cabin port lights with safety glass and screens.

Dodger constructed of extra heavy duty stainless with hand holds. Bimini connects to dodger and includes side curtains with screens for full cockpit enclosure.

In 1999, the bottom and boot stripe were sandblasted and an Interlux 1000/2000 barrier coat system applied. A Micron CSC Extra bottom coat anti fouling finish was then applied.

Interior Teak and holly cabin sole. Inside steering station. All teak strip lined interior of select Burma teak. Inlaid teak veneer dinette table. Hanging lockers in each cabin, storage under berths, chart drawers, book shelves and cabinets. Two removable dust pans in cabin sole. Teak duckboards. Removable foam backed vinyl head liner. 6" thick foam cloth covered cushions. Curtains in all cabins over portlights. All berths minimum 6"6" long. Master berth mattress custom built inner spring with pillow top.

Espar D8LC built in forced air diesel fired heating system.

King Air 16,000 BTU 120 vac air conditioning / heating system.

Galley Force 10 3 burner propane stove with oven mounted on gimballs. 110 vac Microwave. 12 vdc Adler Barber Cold machine refrigeration. FRP icebox with 4" in-situ polyurethane foam insulation. Foot pump drains boxes overboard. Antique white Formica galley surfaces. Polar brand double stainless sink. Nine drawers, cabinets and dry storage.

Force 10 propane barbeque grille mounted on stern rail.

Head Fully molded, one piece FRP twin compartment- toilet/shower area including tub with seat and soap dish. Wilcox-Crittenden 'Imperial' manual head with "Y" valve to stainless holding tank or overboard. Large mirror, stainless sink, and teak grating over floor pan. Shower drains to sump holding tank.

Rudder & Steering System Rudder and skeg of airfoil section with massive stainless internal reinforcement, FRP construction with closed cell PU foam filling. Cast stainless heel fitting with teflon bearing. Cutlass bearing in rudder port. Bronze stuffing box above watereline. Upper rudder stock bracket through bolted to cockpit deckhead. Emergency tiller direct connection through cockpit deck plate. Radial drive with 7x19 stainless wire direct to pedestal. Rudder stops cast-in on quadrant. Yacht Specialties steering pedestal and pedestal guard. 36" diameter teak rimmed stainless destroyer type wheel.

Racor 75/150 max dual element primary fuel filtration with 10 micron elements, heat sheilds, selector valve, vacuum guage, dual water sensor probes. Secondary Yanmar 7 micron fuel filter.

Water System 150 gallons in 2 stainless removable tanks complete with dipsticks, inter connector valve and quick release inspection ports. Individual deck fills. 1/2" diameter copper tubing supply lines. 10 gallon hot water heater tank for 110VAC shore power and heat exchanger from from engine. Hot and cold pressurized water system with Par 36800 electric pressure pump and accumulator tank. Back-up foot pump cold water supply to galley and head. Salt water supply to galley with foot pump. Shower sump with 10 gallon FRP tank, Rule pump and float switch. Anchor wash down system with Par 36950 electric pressure pump.

Sails are new Radial Cut 7oz Main Sail with Harken 5 Battcar System, laminate construction including elliptical leach, triple sewen seams, 5 full solid battens, loose footed, 3 reef points, spectra leach cord.

2001 140% Asymmetrical Radial 1.4oz spinnaker, blue and white with ATN tacker and cruising chute sleeve.

#2 Yankee, staysail, 150% genoa and spare main. 2001 88sqft orange 10oz ATN storm staysail. Sail cover for main and UV covers for furling yankee, genoa and staysail.   

Sail area 337sqft main and 471 fore triangle.     

Mast, Rigging & Hardware Isomat (made in France) annodized mast, keel stepped, double spreaders, standing rigging 1x19 stainless wire,(standing rigging replaced 1/1/03).  deck collar and boot, double groove headstay, running backs, 2 genoa sheets, mainsheet, (3) internal halyards, Harken main outhaul and Harken traveler, Goiot roller furling jib, Harken roller furling staysail, 3 reef point main and lazy jacks. Harken blocks. Harken Batt Car system on main, Harken track and car for spinnaker pole. Forespar carbon fiber spinnaker pole. Sheets, lines and halyards led back to cockpit with Harken blocks, Lewmar line clutches and Schaefer over the top blocks.

Barient 2 speed self tailing winches: (2) #32 Genoa sheets, (2) #16 Spinnaker sheets, (3) #16 Cockpit lines, (2) #16  Mast halyards. Three winch handles.

1 3/4" diameter SS mast guards with teak belaying pin rails and 8 SS belaying pins.

Electrical Conforms to USCG and ABYC regulations governing wire type, coding and load capacity. Two 8D 245Ah West Marine AGM gel cell house batteries secured by stainless tie down rods. Starting battery 120 Ah Seaworthy gel cell. Batteries interconnected by two selector switches to provide emergency starting and house power. Xantrex Link 20 two bank battery monitoring system. Battery wiring protected by in line Blue Sea Mega Fuse Blocks. Five 12V reading lights, 16 dome lights, 4 indiirect fluorescent lights. 4 metal halide lights on a dimmer switch and 3 red courtesy lights on floor for night time illumination. Six 12V Hella fans.

Complete set of Aqua Signal international navigation lights with 2 nm range. Aqua Signal 40 combination strobe light mounted on masthead.

Balmar  91-150 dual output 150 amp alternator charging house batteries and Yanmar 44 amp alternator charging starting battery. Xantrex 40 amp 3 bank battery charger, 4KVA 240/220/120 vac isolation and step down transformer. Two Hubble 120v 35a AC Shore Sockets.

Copper common bonding conductor running length of hull with 2 zinc anodes on  hull, one on shaft and Dynaplate. Three inch copper foils runs length of hull on both sides for single sideband grounding.
